A Letter from our Founder
Founder of Hearts for San Diego
Hearts for San Diego is a project of love. This nonprofit is a tribute to my mother and father. In 1997, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She beat cancer and inspired me with her generous heart and charitable activities to help others battling cancer. In 2008, my dad passed away after a long battle with coronary heart disease. Around this time, my mom started showing signs of dementia and she passed away in December 2018 after a 12-year battle against Alzheimer’s. The overwhelming feeling of helplessness while watching these diseases take their toll on my parents was the catalyst to forming Hearts for San Diego.
These are just two examples of life experiences that the majority of us have been, or will be affected by at some point in our lives. Major life events such as these affects our hearts, our perseverance and our faith. Many of us have a desire to do more, to give back and make this world a better place. I didn’t know where to begin but I needed to channel my energy somewhere. Alzheimer’s and heart disease were extremely important to me, but my dad was also a veteran, I wanted to support our environment, help the homeless, children and animals - the list continued to grow. Hearts for San Diego was an opportunity for me to combine my event planning background with charitable giving. Rather than focusing on one specific cause, I wanted to “spread the love” by supporting a variety of nonprofits that are so selflessly helping others.
The mission of Hearts for San Diego is to connect and inspire communities to support local causes. Our nonprofit is designed to increase awareness of our local charities, their missions, and to generate greater levels of support to help them succeed with their inspiring work. We organize FUNdraising events that spotlight a different cause and nonprofit at each event. Our goal is to provide a fun, educational experience where attendees can learn more about the specific cause at hand and the many ways they can contribute, all while having a great time and meeting people who share this passion. There are many ways in which you can make an impact...one small gesture is all it takes, and our mission is to share this information with you at each event so you can decide the best way, for you, to contribute, whether it be attending events, donating goods, services or monetary donations, or volunteering your time. Please join us for a future event and share our passion for giving back to San Diego.
Thank you for your support,
Karen Moy, Ph.D.
